Lupi refuses to respond in CPMI of the INSS and causes chat in the Senate

The Session of DA, on Monday (8), was marked by strong tension and a chat that almost ended in physical confrontation among parliamentarians. The confusion began after Congressman Marcel Van Hattem (Novo-RS) asked questions incisive to former Pension Minister Carlos Lupi, who declined to answer. Van Hattem questioned Lupi about indications of suspicious names of involvement in the fraud scheme that diverted billions of retirees.

Among them, he mentioned Giovanes Piquen, Jucimar Fonseca and Reinaldo Barroso, pointed out in a report by the Federal Police as linked to irregularities. The deputy accused the former minister of prevarication, claiming that he would be aware of the practices and did not communicate to the authorities. Lupi’s refusal to respond generated immediate reaction. Deputies of the Government and Opposition base exchanged accusations, raising the tone and transforming the plenary on stage of harsh discussions.

The most heated confrontation occurred between Rogério Correia (PT-MG) and Sostenes Cavalcante (PL-RJ), forcing the committee to intervene to restore the order. The session was suspended for Lupi’s lawyers to guide him. The silence of the former minister, although supported by the Constitution, was interpreted by analysts as a political setback. Earlier, he had stated that he was at CPMI to collaborate and had nothing to hide.

The episode reinforced the expectation of hard clashes in the commission, which investigates fraud in the INSS payroll system and had already been fertile ground for disputes between government and opposition.
