Harvesting at the right time is the basis of success
Long -term storage is suitable only fully mature, but unprinted fruits. According to the variety, apples mostly from September to October. You will not only recognize it by taste, but also by the color of the skin and coloring of the seeds, which should be dark brown. But do not wait for the apples to fall from the tree itself, then it is usually too late.
Harvest individual apples carefully, ideally using gardening scissors. Try to keep the stem because without it the apples are faster. Collect each fruit separately, without twitching and throwing in the trash. Even minor damage can be a potential way for.
Carefully sort the fruits after harvesting. Only the apples that are not battered, worm or otherwise disturbed are suitable for storage. Others are better consumed as soon as possible, for example for must, compote or dried.
Where and how to store apples
The ideal place for storage of apples is a cool, dark and damp room. The cellar, unheated garage or pantry with a temperature between 2 and 5 degrees Celsius are best. Sufficient humidity is also important, at least 85 %. If the air is too dry, the apples begin to dry and pour.
Preferably store the apples in crates, boxes or shelves. Make sure the fruits do not touch each other. This will prevent the spread of rot from one fetus to another. You can wrap each apple in thin paper or stack them in rows between which you put straw, sawdust or paper.
Storage in plastic bags with several small holes is also suitable to maintain moisture while allowing breathing. However, the bags must not be completely closed to avoid the accumulation of ethylene, which speeds up maturation and decomposition.

Alternatives of storage and tip at the end
If you do not have a cellar or other cold room, you can store apples in the fridge. Take advantage of the lower vegetable socket and take advantage of sufficient humidity. But count on less capacity and shorter durability.
You can also process apples, such as dry, cider, cook jam or bake. Dried apples, or crosses, are among the most popular home delicacies and last you all winter.
Whatever variant you decide, the most important thing is: store only quality and undamaged fruits. This allows you to enjoy your own apples long after the last leaf falls off the tree.
