New York Climate Week starts this Sunday (21), less than two months from COP30, which will be held in November in Belém (PA). The meeting brings together heads of state, representatives of the private sector and civil society to discuss emission reduction commitments and climate financing mechanisms.
The Brazilian program includes the presentation of a report prepared by the Global Ethical Council, initiative conducted by the presidency of COP30 and the Ministry of Environment, with contributions from scientists, political, religious and business leaders of six continents. The document will be delivered to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and UN Secretary-General António Guterres as the basis for accelerating the global goal to limit warming to 1.5 ° C.
On Tuesday (23), Lula will have a high level meeting at UN headquarters to articulate support to the Fund Forests Forever (TFFF), a Brazilian government proposal that seeks to raise up to US $ 125 billion in different conditions to transfer to countries with tropical forests. Already confirmed interest Norway, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, United Arab Emirates and China, as well as countries such as Colombia, Ghana, Congo, Indonesia and Malaysia, which participate in the structuring of the mechanism.
Discussion on Goals
On Wednesday (24), Lula and Guterres will command together Climate Summit, central event of the week, focused on the discussion of NDCs-the nationally determined contributions that define greenhouse gas reduction goals to 2035. The deadline for delivery expires at the end of September, but so far most of the Paris agreement has not yet presented their proposals.
Among the arrears are the European Union, which should announce a declaration of intention with cutting goal between 66.25% and 72.5% compared to 1990, using carbon credits, and China, which has not yet formalized its goals. Analysts point out that the Asian country should propose cuts of 10% to 15%, below necessary to maintain the 1.5 ° C trajectory. India, the third largest global broadcaster, should not send ministers to the conference either.
Parallel
In addition to the UN central event, Climate Week in New York brings together other agendas focused on investors, activists and members of civil society. “Celebrities” like Bill Gates and Mark Ruffalo are confirmed presences. Other high -level events also bring together important climate names, such as the already traditional meeting led by Bloomberg Philantropies and the global Renewables Summit, with debates on renewable energy expansion and emerging market financing mechanisms.
The program also includes a Brazilian initiative in partnership with FAO to discuss the growing risks of forest fires, as well as consultations from the presidency of COP30, with André Corrêa do Lago and Ana Toni, in preparation for the meeting of Belém.
New York Climate Week takes place amid countdown to COP30, which will bring leaders from nearly 200 countries in Brazil. It is expected to be decisive in keeping alive the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 ° C.
