China’s latest and most capable aircraft carrier used its new electromagnetic catapult to successfully launch three types of aircraft, according to the Chinese state social media, which released images of releases for the first time to mark technological advancement.
In the images released by state CCTV broadcaster on Monday, China’s fifth-generation J-35 Sneakers, the 4.5 generation J-15T fighter and the Early Alert and KJ-600 control aircraft were seen peeling from the Fujian aircraft carrier using its advanced launch system, also known as elas.
The state communication greeted tests as another “advance” in the development of China aircraft carrier and a “milestone” in the advancement of their naval transformation.
The only other aircraft carrier in the world that has the elas system is the newest US Navy aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R Ford, which has been certified for flight track operations using the Emals system in the 2022 spring.
Development occurs as a US Congress delegation is in Beijing for negotiations to reinforce bilateral ties, including communication between the Armed Forces, on the first visit to China in six years.
Successful tests in Fujian, which included both Catapult’s launch and braking landing, means that the ship’s commissioning-when he officially enters the Fleet of the Popular Liberation Army Navy (Plan)-may be just a few weeks away, said analyst Carl Schuster, former US Navy captain.
Other certifications may be expected in the coming months, with final tests about the Fujian’s ability to integrate with the Air Force and the Popular Liberation Army (PLA) missile force probably occurring next spring, Schuster said.
The EMALS system allows transport aircraft to take off with heavier weapon and fuel loads than those operating in the two oldest aircraft carriers in China, Shandong and Liaoning, which have ski-type bump ramps, allowing Fujian aircraft to attack longer distance enemies.
Analysts stated that Fujian’s ability to launch larger war aircraft by carrying heavier ammunition loads for longer distances will give the aircraft holder a greater combat range than its predecessors in the Chinese fleet, providing the so-called “blue waters” skills.
Although the elas system puts the fujian on an equal footing with USS Gerald R Ford from the US Navy-the Nimitz’s 10-navy-oldest aircraft carrier depend on steam catapults to launch aircraft-Chinese aircraft carrier is not nuclear-powered like all US aircraft carrier.
Nuclear energy allows US aircraft carrier to remain in the sea while the crew supplies last. Fujian is conventional fuel, which means it needs to scale on a port or be fueled by a tanker in the sea to replenish.
Military communication
As China increases its naval power, it has also acted more assertively in regional waters, from the Taiwan Strait to the Seas of East and Southern China, attracting frequent US criticism, as well as its regional allies, such as Japan and the Philippines.
On Tuesday, US deputy Adam Smith, the main democrat of the Armed Services Committee of the House of Representatives and leader of the Beijing delegation, said military relations between the US and China are a cause for “special concern.”
“China is the fastest growing military and nuclear power in the world. The US has the largest armed forces in the world and the largest nuclear arsenal. It is dangerous for us not to have regular communications about our abilities and intentions, so that we can understand each other and so that calculation and misunderstandings do not lead to greater problems,” Smith told journalists in Beijing.
“We have seen this happen to our ships, our planes, their ships, their planes, approaching each other too much. We need to have a better conversation about how to avoid these conflicts,” he said, while asked the US and China to intensify the dialogue about nuclear weapons.
The rapid development of AI, drones and cyber and spatial abilities only exacerbated the risk of misunderstandings, he added.
The bipartisan group arrived in Beijing on Sunday and had a number of meetings with Chinese authorities, including Prime Minister Li Qiang, Defense Minister Dong Jun and vice-minister He Lifeng, who has led trade negotiations with the US on behalf of China.
At Monday’s meeting, Smith told Dong that the US wanted to open the lines of communication with China, especially in military issues.
Dong has exhorted US legislators to “remove disruptive and restrictive factors” and take constructive and pragmatic measures to improve military relations between the US and China, according to the Chinese state social media.
The trip occurred after a telephone call on Friday between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping and is the latest in a series of high-level meetings between the two countries before a possible summit between their leaders.
After the call, Trump said he will meet Xi at Apec’s summit in South Korea next month and will visit China early next year. The leaders also agreed that Xi would come to the United States “at the appropriate time,” said Trump.
