Italy will recognize the Palestinian state only under two conditions: all Israeli hostages must be released and Hamas must be excluded from any future government. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced it in New York on Tuesday.
Italy will recognize the Palestinian state only if all Israeli hostages are being reached in the Gaza Strip and if the militant Hamas movement is excluded from possible participation in the government. This was stated on Tuesday by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, reports TASR according to Reuters and ANSA.
“I am not against the recognition of Palestine, but we should set the right priorities,” Meloni told reporters. She announced that its government would submit the Parliament’s proposal providing these two conditions, hoping to support the opposition.
The Prime Minister of the Italian government announced this in New York, where she participates in the UN General Assembly meeting. According to her, international pressure should be exerted especially on Hamas, not to Israel, because this group has begun the war and blocks its termination by refusing to hand over hostages.
Meloni leads the right -wing government, one of the strongest ally of Israel in the EU and which, unlike Britain, France or Canada, refused to recognize Palestinian statehood this month.
