United States President Donald Trump said the United States are using tariff policy as a mechanism for defending the nation’s “sovereignty and security” during his speech at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday (23).
“In the United States, we want trade and robust trade with all nations, with everyone. We want to help the nations. We will help the nations. But it must also be fair and reciprocal,” he told the world leaders.
The American leader stated that countries that “broke the rules” negatively impacted the nations that followed business rules.
“That’s why the United States is now applying tariffs to other countries. And just as these tariffs have been applied to us for many years … We use tariffs as a defense mechanism under the Trump administration,” he expressed.
The president also stated that the rates “will ensure that the system works for everyone and be sustainable in the future.”
