The talk show led by humorist Jimmy Kimmel aired in the United States on Tuesday after a week suspension caused by criticism of the presenter’s deaths about the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk and the subsequent government threats to the broadcasters, which, according to critics, represented a brake on freedom of expression.
During the opening monologue of the program, in which Kimmel was expected to talk about what happened, the presenter mentioned the murder of Charlie Kirk and explained that he was not making jokes with the tragedy.
“You understand that it was never my intention to mock the murder of a young man. I don’t think there’s nothing funny about it,” the presenter said. “I understand that for some, it seemed inopportune or unaffected, or maybe both, and for those who think I pointed out my finger, I understand why they are upset.”
