Duel between Popó and Wanderlei ends with violence between teams in the ring

The fight between Popó Freitas and Wanderlei Silva ended with confusion between the teams on Saturday night (28). The unprecedented confrontation between the two former boxing athletes was decreed by the referee after Wanderlei was warned.

Prior to the official announcement of Popó as winner of the fight, the teams of the two athletes broke into the ring and started a widespread fight. The confusion was contained in a few moments by the security team.

During the fight, Wanderlei Silva was punched, fell to the floor and needed help leaving the ring. Blood marks and purple axes were visible on the athlete’s face.

The fight

Three points were discounted from Wanderlei throughout the fight due to the practice of prohibited boxing, such as the immobilization of the opponent and the assault with the head. The tension grew during the dispute mainly at times when Wanderlei failed part of the rules.

As soon as the announcement of the third point discounted by the referee, who was followed by the disqualification of Wanderlei, the athlete Popó celebrated the victory and then the teams broke into the ring starting the confusion.

Initially the fight was scheduled to happen between Wanderlei Silva and Vitor Belfort. However, Belfort suffered an injury, he said, “serious and that needs to be treated very carefully.”

Given this scenario, Popó was announced as the substitute for the confrontation.
