EU debt levels have more than doubled in three years


How does Brussels manage the funds deposited by EU member states? The auditors of the European Court of Auditors (ECA) address this question every year. After all, there are significant amounts involved – including the debts taken on. In total, around 247 billion euros were paid out by the EU to its 27 members in 2024, 191 of which came from the EU budget and a further 56 from the Recovery and Resilience Facility (ARF). The fund was created in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The idea: Emerge from the crisis stronger.
