O Federal Public Ministry (MPF) issued this Thursday (9) a favorable opinion on the return of Marcelo Lima (Podemos) to the position of mayor of . The politician has been away since August, after an operation by the which investigates alleged corruption and money laundering schemes in the municipal administration.

The opinion was sent to the Superior Court of Justice (STJ), where the habeas corpus presented by the mayor’s defense is being processed. The final decision will be made by the minister reporting the case, who in a previous order had denied an injunction to suspend the removal. Marcelo Lima was charged by the Public Ministry of São Paulo (MP-SP) along with nine other people. Investigations point to fraud in public contracts and diversion of resources through companies with ties to City Hall.

In August, the São Paulo Court of Justice (TJ-SP) maintained the mayor’s precautionary removal, after the STJ ordered the court to reevaluate the measure. The defense maintains that, with the conclusion of the investigations and the presentation of the complaint, there is no longer a need for precautionary measures. Since leaving Lima, vice-mayor Jéssica Cormick has been in charge of São Bernardo do Campo City Hall.
