The award for the leader of the opposition in Venezuela was received with reservations by some leaders on the left, who, however, considered that it was a better choice than awarding the award to the American president, .
The opposition leader was prevented from challenging the dictator in the 2024 elections. She was also detained and released after trying to revive resistance to the Venezuelan. The committee characterized María Corina as a “key, unifying figure in a previously deeply divided political opposition.”
Former president of the PSB, Carlos Siqueira says he does not know of any achievements by the opponent for peace anywhere on the planet. “He is a very important leader of the Venezuelan opposition, but the Nobel Peace Prize for a person who has not promoted peace anywhere on the planet is unjustifiable,” he states. “Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s a good fit for the prize.”
Siqueira says he recognizes the leadership of María Corina and an opposition that has problems with the Venezuelan dictatorship. “Now, between this and receiving the Nobel Peace Prize there is a brutal difference, because this award really doesn’t seem justifiable to me”, adds the former president of the PSB, who described the decision as “clearly political”.
For him, the fact that the leader of the Venezuelan opposition decided to dedicate the award to the American Donald Trump makes everything worse. “What does Trump have to do with peace? The peace that they are attributing to him in Gaza is not his. The people responsible for peace in are the Israeli Armed Forces, who ended up practically defeating and eliminating Hamas.”
Former governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Tarso Genro also states that rewarding María Corina is better than awarding the award to Trump. “María Corina does not have taxing powers, nor does she want to do so,” he says. Asked how he assessed the fact that the opponent had , Genro replied: “I think she’s a better human being than him.”
