PS/Madeira leader leaves office after the socialists lost Ponta do Sol. “Below expectations”, he admitted.
The leader of PS/Madeira, Paulo Cafôfo, announced today the resignation following the results of the local elections, in which he lost one of the three presidencies of municipal councils he held.
O PS lost Ponta do Sol City Council todayin the western part of the island of Madeira, which was governed for the last eight years by Célia Pessegueiro, and maintained leadership in the municipalities of Machico and Porto Moniz.
Paulo Cafôfo recalled that, after the regional legislative elections last March, in which the PS went from being the largest opposition party to the third political force in the region, it made a commitment to lead the socialist regional structure up to the municipal ones.
As today the “results fell short of expectations”the socialist leader “assumes responsibilities”, will call internal elections in 15 days, but will not run again.
In the other Municipal Chambers of Madeira: Calheta, Câmara de Lobos, Funchal, Porto Santo, Ribeira Brava will be led by the PSD, with or without a coalition with the CDS – in addition to Ponta do Sol, which “took away” the PS; Santa Cruz will be led by JPP; Santana for the CDS; and also São Vicente, which was Chega’s debut in the country, leading Chambers.
