Charles Crawford, 59, was sentenced to death for the rape and murder of college student Krista Ray, 20, in 1994. The lethal substance was administered to him at 18:00 local time (Wednesday 1:00 CET) at Parchman State Prison and he was pronounced dead 15 minutes later.
On Tuesday, two convicted murderers were executed – in Florida and in Missouri – and another execution is scheduled for Friday. Richard Djerf, 55, is scheduled to be executed by lethal injection in Arizona on Friday for the brutal 1993 murders of four members of a Phoenix family.
There have been 38 executions in the United States this year, the most since 2013, when 39 prisoners were executed. Florida carried out the most executions (14), followed by Texas (5) and South Carolina and Alabama (4 each).
Thirty-two of this year’s executions were carried out by lethal injection, two by shooting and four by nitrogen inhalation. This method of carrying out the death penalty has been condemned by UN experts as cruel and inhumane.
