Argentina is holding legislative elections this Sunday (26) that could redefine the fate of Javier Milei’s government. The election is considered the president’s biggest political test since he took office and will put at stake the viability of his liberal project in the face of a fragmented Congress that is increasingly resistant to the proposed reforms.
Without a majority in Parliament, Milei depends on a good result at the polls to avoid blocking decrees and laws and keep his economic agenda alive, centered on the “Argentina Grande Otra Vez” program, inspired by American President Donald Trump’s campaign motto, Make America Great Again.
Reforms are a priority
The plan Argentina Great Again combines labor and tax reforms aimed at reducing bureaucracy in the economy and stimulating private investment. Among the measures under discussion are the authorization for payment of salaries in dollars, the end of the automatic renewal of collective agreements and the reduction of legal disputes between companies and workers.

In the fiscal area, the government promises to eliminate around 20 taxes, expand deductions for companies and simplify the collection system. According to Milei, the objective is to create “a competitive environment, with fewer obstacles and more economic freedom”.
“Argentina will become great again when we stop suffocating those who produce and when the State stops disrupting the market”, stated the president in a recent campaign speech.
The partnership with Donald Trump has been one of Milei’s main bets to politically support his government and signal stability to the international market. The and promised a second package of the same value, conditioned on the continuity of the current government and the progress of reforms.

During a visit to the White House in early October, Milei received public support from Trump, who reinforced the strategic nature of the alliance. “We are here to support you in the next elections. If you win, we will continue together. If you lose, we will not be generous”, declared the Republican, in a warning tone.
Political challenges
The performance of A Liberdade Avança this Sunday will be decisive for the remainder of the term, which ends in 2027. If he does not win at least a third of the seats in the Chamber, Milei could see his ability to govern seriously compromised, with the risk of legislative paralysis and new political defeats.
In recent weeks, Congress has already suspended presidential decrees and halted economic liberalization measures, highlighting the fragility of the government’s political articulation.
In addition to the economic agenda, the plan Argentina Great Again includes public security measures, such as reducing the age of criminal responsibility, increasing penalties for violent crimes and regulating firearms, which has expanded the debate about the limits of the right-wing agenda in the country.
