Panama and US carry out joint training amid tensions with Venezuela

Panamanian police and the United States military carried out joint jungle survival training on Wednesday (22) at the former US military base of Fort Sherman, near the city of Colón, Panama, amid escalating tensions between the United States, Venezuela and Colombia.

The training, part of a bilateral cooperation program, coincided with President Donald Trump’s new offensive against drug trafficking.

The initiative led to at least seven attacks in the Caribbean and increased .

The exercises, held at Fort Sherman — now a Panamanian police installation near the Atlantic entrance to the Panama Canal — used the site’s dense tropical vegetation and abandoned structures as a training ground for American troops and Panamanian police.

“We are focusing on mutually promoting training and trust,” said Colonel Ada Cotto, commander of the American contingent.

The training includes survival techniques, tactical maneuvers and tracking in jungle terrain, seeking to strengthen regional security cooperation, improve interoperability between the forces of both nations and strengthen preparedness for natural disasters and transnational threats.
