Alejandro Fokina’s career in tennis

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina was born on June 5, 1999, in Malaga. Son of a Russian father and a Swedish mother, he started playing tennis as a child and attracted attention in the youth categories due to his combination of physical strength and technical ability.

His rise on the professional circuit began in 2017, when he began competing in ITF and Challengers tournaments, accumulating important victories that took him to the top 200 in the world rankings.

The following year he won the Wimbledon youth doubles title and reached the quarterfinals in singles. In 2019, he debuted in Grand Slam tournaments and reached the third round of the US Open.

The big leap in his career came in 2021, when he reached the quarterfinals of Roland Garros. There, the Spaniard defeated more experienced names and, in the same year, entered the top-50 of the ATP rankings for the first time.

In 2022, Fokina had another great performance when he reached the final of the Monte Carlo Masters 1000, beating Novak Djokovic, despite being defeated by Stefanos Tsitsipas in the decider. Since then, he has remained among the main names on the circuit.

The Basel ATP final will be Fokina’s second meeting with João Fonseca in 2025. The first took place in the second round of the Masters 1000 in Cincinnati, when the Brazilian advanced to the stage after the Spaniard abandoned the match.
