Newborn is almost buried alive in Rio Branco and father says: “They threw him in a bag”

A newborn identified as José Pedro woke up during his own burial this Saturday morning (25), at the Morada da Paz Cemetery, located in the Calafate region, in Rio Branco.

According to information from the child’s father, Marcos dos Santos Fernandes, he and his wife, Sabrina Souza da Costa, are from the municipality of Pauini, in the interior of Amazonas, and arrived in the capital of Acre on Thursday (23). Sabrina was admitted to the Bárbara Heliodora Maternity Hospital with bleeding, which led doctors to perform labor induction procedures, as she was five months pregnant.

On Friday night (24), the baby — who was named José Pedro, but had not yet been registered — was born prematurely. Shortly afterwards, the obstetrician who delivered the baby declared the newborn dead. The body was placed inside a plastic bag, as is customary after death, and sent to the maternity morgue.

The father then called the Morada da Paz funeral service, which collected the body and carried out standard burial procedures.
This Saturday morning (25), around 10 am, during the burial, family members heard the child crying inside the bag, which was already placed in the coffin. When they opened it, they found that the baby was alive. A video was recorded to prove the fact and denounce the medical error that occurred at the health unit.

Desperate, the family interrupted the burial, removed the baby from the coffin and tried to warm him with their own bodies, as he showed signs of hypothermia. They then immediately took the child back to the maternity ward, in the car of a cemetery employee.

Upon arriving again at the Bárbara Heliodora Maternity Hospital, the baby was rushed to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The child’s aunt, Maria Aparecida, told the reporter that the baby spent the entire night in the morgue after the alleged death.

“He stayed in a bag all night, until Saturday morning. We only discovered that he was alive when he started crying, already in the cemetery”, he reported.

Lieutenant Israel, who followed the incident, confirmed the fact and reported that, upon arriving at the maternity ward, he did not find the doctors who certified the child’s death, as both would be taken to the Police Station to provide clarification to the police authority.

The death certificate was signed by doctor Jheryska Kessis Gonçalves Carvalho Campos, CRM 3292/AC, graduated in 2022, with registration registered with the Regional Council of Medicine of Acre on February 29, 2024.

The child’s father was taken to the Child and Adolescent Protection Police Station (DPCA), where the case was registered. The Acre Civil Police reported that it will monitor the investigation.

The ContilNet report attempted to contact the Acre State Department of Health (Sesacre) to obtain information about the case. The office said it is investigating what happened.
