Analysis: Private sector is optimistic about possible suspension of tariffs

The meeting between Presidents Lula and Donald Trump, scheduled for this Sunday (26), in Malaysia, raises expectations about possible advances in trade relations between Brazil and the United States. According to Economics analyst and CNN Money anchor Fernando Nakagawa, in Now CNN“although there is no forecast of immediate closing of agreements, there is optimism about the possibility of Trump temporarily suspending tariffs in the private sector.”

The analyst recalls that this has already been a strategy used in negotiations with other countries such as Mexico, Canada, the European Union, South Africa and China. “When Trump realizes that the other country is willing to grant some of America’s wishes, he agrees to a temporary suspension,” says Nakagawa.

Cards on the table

To achieve a positive result in the negotiations, Brazil needs to present concrete counterparts. For the analyst, among the possible Brazilian offers are critical minerals, which are receptive to foreign capital, in addition to investments by Brazilian companies in the United States, totaling tens of billions of dollars.

Companies such as Embraer and JBS already maintain significant investments in American territory. Furthermore, recent acquisitions of military material, including , could serve as positive points in negotiations.

If tariffs are not immediately suspended, it is expected that the meeting will at least result in an expansion of the scope of negotiations between the two countries. “This would allow more government areas, in addition to the current representatives Marco Rubio and Mauro Vieira, to participate in the talks, enabling greater traction in trade discussions”, he concludes.
