Autumn missteps in the garden
The first is a very common mistake elimination of fallen leaves from the garden. Of course, there must be some control and the garden would then be completely lost in the leaves, but everything in moderation. Many people forget that fallen leaves may not only serve as possible mulch, but also as shelter for animals. Hedgehogs or ladybugs can hide under the leaves and wait out the winter here. In the spring, these animals in turn take care of eliminating pests. That’s why it’s good not to bother with the attacked leaves and at least leave them in some places.
The second very common mistake in the autumn garden is insufficient lawn preparation. Many people cut their lawns too short for fear that the grass will be too tall in the spring. But that weakens the roots and increases susceptibility to frost. This will also increase the risk that the roots will be more susceptible to various diseases. So during autumn mowing leave the grass at least 5 centimeters in height. You should plan your last mowing before winter at the end of October or beginning of November, before the grass is frozen.
As far as that is concerned, a lot of people make mistakes. One would think that it is advisable to feed the plants properly before winter, so they fertilize too much. Excessive fertilization however, it will do the opposite, because plants weaken. It is also important to remember that if you are going to fertilize before winter, definitely avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Nitrogen promotes the growth of new shoots, which are susceptible to frost and will be damaged very easily. Therefore fertilize with potassium and phosphorus, these support a healthy root system and strengthen the plants to make them more resistant to frost and disease.
Watch out for trees and bushes
The last mistake almost everyone makes is underestimating the care of young trees and shrubs. If you just leave them at the mercy of the cold, you can lose them very quickly. Therefore protect their app roots and ideally paint the trunks with white anti-crack paint caused by frost. Also, don’t be afraid to take advantage white non-woven fabric and protect smaller bushes and beds with perennials with it. If you avoid these mistakes, you will see your garden bloom like wildfire in the spring.
