The Brazilian João Fonseca faces the Canadian Denis Shapovalov this Tuesday (10/28), around 8:30 am (Brasília time), for the 64th round of the Masters 1000 in Paris. And the second duel between the athletes in less than a week. In the first, last Friday (10/24), in the quarterfinals of the ATP 500 in Basel, Shapovalov withdrew during the match and João Fonseca advanced to the semifinals.

João Fonseca was winning by a landslide when Shapovalov retired. In the first set, the Canadian won 6-3. In the second, it was the Brazilian who won 6-3. In the third and decisive set, when João was ahead 4-1, Shapovalov decided to withdraw suddenly, receiving some boos from the public. THE Canadian did not request medical attention and left the courtwithout making it clear whether it was affected by injury or any physical discomfort.

After the confrontation, Shapovalov also did not speak about his situation. This Monday (27/09), the The ATP website published an interview with the Canadian and the page cited discomfort in the athlete’s right kneecurrently 26 years old:

– Despite the persistent concern about an injury to his right knee, the reason for his withdrawal in Basel, Shapovalov remains optimistic – highlighted the ATP website.

With Shapovalov coming back from a right knee issue last Friday and João Fonseca riding high for the ATP 500 title in Basel, they will meet again this Tuesday, in their debut at the Masters 1000 in Paris 2025.

Denis Shapovalov: characteristics, playing style and titles

Denis Shapovalov, currently 24th in the ATP rankings, is known for his explosive and creative style of play, marked by powerful shots and a one-handed backhand. He also stood out on the youth circuit, winning the Junior Wimbledon title in 2016.
