Dupla clarifies that the legal team has not stopped working and is evaluating whether or not to appeal the decision. For now, the only certainty, they admit, is that their careers “will continue”.
It was almost a month ago that comedian Joana Marques was acquitted in court of the action brought by Anjos. Just when it was thought that the legal battle had already reached its end, the singers don’t seem to be stopping there.

“Our lives will go on, of course. The process, if it has to be followed, follows; if it doesn’t have to be followed, it doesn’t follow. Now, what follows is our career. That’s a fact”, says the duo’s older brother.
On October 3rd, the case was considered “unfounded” in its entirety. The process dates back to April 2022, after the Portuguese band sang the national anthem at the Portuguese MotoGP Grand Prix. The moment led the comedian to make a joke about her performance on her social networks.

More than one million euros in compensation

After the comedian was acquitted in court of the action brought by Anjos, the duo’s defense was left to evaluate whether they would appeal the decision, an analysis that, apparently, is still ongoing.
Freedom of expression, acne and Mário Machado
The process began to be and a lot of ink flowed. From the outset, the limits of freedom of expression are being questioned. Lawyer Beatriz Valério said at the beginning of the trial, in an interview with SIC, that “freedom of expression is sacred, but it cannot involve defamation“.
In the way the Justice evaluates the issue of freedom of expression, the lawyer said: “I think there can be no limits to freedom of expression. Expressing opinions, using humor, with certain jokes and sarcasm, cannot have limits. Now, you can’t go on offense either, you can’t go into a personal attack. Issuing opinions and freedom of expression is something that is untouchable. It is a freedom and it is a fundamental right within a Rule of Law, a democratic Rule of Law, including at European level and in the European court, it is something that is sacred, I would even say. Now, the freedom of expression, being sacred, does not allow, for example, defamation.”
SIC even spoke to . Ricardo Araújo Pereira, for example, said that if “there are limits”, he would like someone to “point out what they are”.
O . One of the sessions was marked by the testimony of Nelson Rosado who said that they received threats and were accused of having “murdered the anthem”. One claimed that he had a eye leak ea take medication for anxiety. The other spoke of a acne crisis triggered by the nervous system.
In the final arguments, the Anjos’ defense lawyers also recovered the testimony of Ricardo Araújo Pereira, Joana Marques’ witness, to state that if o in the case of offenses against Left-wing deputies.
“Ridiculing and satirizing are not synonymous, they are different things”, they argued.
