The Brazilian was eliminated in the second round of the Masters 1000 in Paris this Wednesday (29), after losing to the Russian Karen Khachanov, number 18 in the ATP rankings, by 2 sets to 1 — partials of 6/1, 3/6 and 6/3 — in 1h50 of a match played at Arena La Défense, in the French capital. Fonseca, who had good campaigns at the Masters 1000 in Cincinnati and Miami, was unable to repeat his performance and had an irregular performance against his experienced opponent. The Russian started dominant, took advantage of the Brazilian’s mistakes and won the first set 6/1, after breaking two consecutive serves.

The second set marked the reaction of the young carioca. With more confidence and consistency, Fonseca opened 3/0 and maintained control until closing at 6/3, tying the match. However, in the third and decisive set, Khachanov raised his level again, achieved a break in the eighth game and confirmed the victory on the next serve, ending the match at 6/3. With the result, Khachanov advances to the round of 16 and will face the winner of the duel between Canadian Gabriel Diallo and Australian Alex de Minaur. Fonseca, in turn, is preparing to compete in the ATP 250 in Athens, Greece, which starts next Monday.
