The EU shares responsibility for ensuring that the autocratic regime under Aleksandar Vučić still feels secure. The EU Commission and Germany are pursuing an embarrassing policy of appeasement, even though democracy in Serbia has been trampled on for years. Free media and critics are suppressed. But a lithium mine is more important to Brussels and Berlin. After environmental protests, Vučić initially dropped the project in 2022. In 2024 he announced that the mine should open after all. Three weeks later – oh surprise – the Constitutional Court also declared the stop to the project unconstitutional. The verdict was apparently ordered by Vučić.
