A total of 550,000 refugees have returned to their country since the fall of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, Turkish Interior Minister Ali Gerlikaya announced today.

About 2.4 million Syrians remain refugees in Turkey, up from 3.5 million at the height of the Syrian war, according to Turkish authorities.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said on Friday that a total of 1.16 million Syrians have returned to their country since December 8, 2024.

According to UNHCR, more than 1.9 million internally displaced people were also able to return to their original homeland.

More than seven million Syrians remain internally displaced and 4.5 million still remain refugees abroad, according to UNHCR.

The civil war that erupted after former president Bashar al-Assad suppressed a popular uprising in 2011 has resulted in millions of Syrians fleeing their country.

The conflict ended in December 2024, when the Islamist coalition led by Ahmad al-Sara, who had previously ousted Assad, took power in Damascus.
