STF gives Zema 15 days to speak out in video case against Gilmar Mendes

Pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic Romeu Zema (Novo) was notified by the Superior Court of Justice and will have 15 days to speak out in the case in which he is suspected of having committed slander against the minister of the Federal Supreme Court, Gilmar Mendes, in a video published on social media satirizing the dean and other members of the Court.

While he was still governor of Minas Gerais, Zema published a video made with Artificial Intelligence that portrays a conversation between puppets characterized as Dias Toffoli and Gilmar Mendes. The satire addresses the dean’s decision that annulled the breaches of confidentiality by the company Maridt, linked to Toffoli and his brothers.

In the dialogue, the character who represents Toffoli asks Gilmar to annul the breaches of confidentiality of his companies, approved within the scope of the Organized Crime CPI. In return, the dean would demand courtesies at the Tayayá resort, of which Toffoli and his brothers were also shareholders and which was the target of investigations in the scandal involving Banco Master, owned by Daniel Vorcaro.

So that Zema could be included in the fake news investigation and investigated for slander and defamation. “The video vilifies not only the honor and image of this Federal Supreme Court, but also my own person”, states an excerpt from the document.

The decision was sent to the STJ after Moraes contacted the Attorney General’s Office, which, in turn, referred the case to the court on May 15 as it understood that this is where the matter should be judged.

This Monday (1st), Zema went to social media to comment on the case. In a new video published, the former governor highlighted that he is “outraged” by the judicial notification, but is “certain that Justice will prevail”.

“I was notified by the Federal Court and guess who the author is? Minister Gilmar Mendes. It seems he didn’t like it when I said that he hitches a ride on a criminal banker’s jet, when I said that he and other Supreme Court ministers made contracts with this criminal banker”, he highlighted in the video.
