The show “Mudança de Hábito – A Divina Comédia Musical da Broadway” continues at Teatro Multiplan, at Shopping VillageMall, in Rio de Janeiro, until November 23rd. In the new production directed by Tadeu Aguiar, actress Amanda Vicente shines in the role of Deloris Van Cartier, a character immortalized by Whoopi Goldberg in the cinema in 1992. Charismatic and powerful, the artist is experiencing a defining moment in her career and spoke with the LeoDias portal about the challenge of assuming the role, recent motherhood and the transformative power of faith.

Amanda says it was a surprise to receive the invitation to play such an iconic and beloved character as Deloris. In the story, she is a nightclub singer who hides in a convent after witnessing a crime. With her contagious energy and passion for music, she transforms the lives of the nuns and finds a new purpose. “It was a huge joy to receive this invitation because I always had this dream, and when it became reality, it was a gift”, he says.

The artist reflects on how she identifies with Deloris, a woman full of energy, irreverence and affection, and who also has a path of transformation. “In many ways. Mainly, being a black woman, who has a lot of faith. And the character is very comical, something that is also part of my personality, so it couldn’t be more enjoyable”, he highlights.

Amanda says that Whoopi Goldberg has been one of her greatest artistic references since childhood. “I remember watching the film at my parents’ house and envisioning doing what was before my eyes, and she represented a strong figure and so close to my reality. There is a lot about her in me as a person, which automatically applies to the character, but I also wanted to bring my construction of Deloris, which I believe was the perfect match”, he highlights.

The new montage brings a redesigned look, with differences in scenery and musical arrangements, resulting in an engaging plot, full of humor and vibrant music. “It’s a very timeless story and, with this new production, we managed to be even more faithful to the Brazilian public, bringing references that are part of our history. I believe that this has brought the public even closer to what we have built”, he says.

Asked if there is a favorite scene or musical number, Amanda highlights: “I literally love all the numbers (laughs), but there is one that has moved me since the rehearsal room, which is ‘Bless Our Show’. It shows the true meaning of sisterhood and love that Deloris was looking for so much.”

The musical addresses themes such as friendship, transformation and faith. Regarding the message that touches her most, the actress reflects: “The love she finds in her sisters, people who are so different and so unlikely to be placed as equals, but who show that life can change human beings if they have love.”

Versatility and vocal power

Amanda is known for her work in productions such as “Rua Azusa – The Musical”, “Donna Summer – The Musical” and “Sweeney Todd”, which reinforce her versatility and vocal power. She reveals the learnings she takes into this new phase as a protagonist. “This is my eleventh musical and my second as a protagonist. I’ve experienced a little bit of everything with each piece, but what I’ve really taken away is the strength and resilience, which I found in this moment living a challenging but very incredible experience!”, he emphasizes.

About what “Mudança de Habito” represents for her, Amanda is direct: “I’m very happy to go up on that stage and defend Deloris. I dreamed of this, and knowing that people leave happy and excited to see their favorite afternoon movie in front of their eyes is a privilege.”

Motherhood and stage: “I feel unbeatable!”

Recently, Amanda Vicente gave birth to her second daughter, little Elisa, who turned three months old. She is already the mother of Mateus, aged 11, who is also the result of her marriage to accounting businessman and technology director Jeziel Oliveira. Back on stage, she talks about the challenge of balancing motherhood and career.

“It’s definitely the biggest challenge of my life. I’m experiencing the postpartum period on stage (laughs). Thank God, my daughter is an angel and I feel like she was being prepared to live this moment with me. Between a rehearsal and a break, I express milk and put her to sleep. And it’s been like that every day”, he says.

Motherhood, according to the actress, also transformed her relationship with art. “I feel like I’m more confident and mature in my performance. This, of course, comes from the weight of motherhood, which makes me give myself 200% on and off the stage. I feel unbeatable!”, she confesses.

Finally, Amanda shares the biggest learning from this double phase. “That I can do anything I want. Life is always in motion and that, at this moment, living this double journey shows me how much my power as a mother, woman and professional drives me to do my best every day. I’m very proud of everything I’ve done”, he concludes.
