Moraes holds a hearing with Cláudio Castro about mega-operation this Monday

Minister Alexandre de Moraes, from the STF (Supreme Federal Court), will be in Rio de Janeiro this Monday (3) for a meeting with governor Cláudio Castro. The meeting aims to hear clarifications about the mega police operation that left at least 121 people dead in the Penha and Alemão complexes last week.

The Secretary of Public Security of the State, the commander of the Military Police, the general delegate of the Civil Police and the director of the General Superintendence of Technical-Scientific Police of Rio de Janeiro will also participate in the hearing. At 6pm the minister meets with the mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paes (check the full agenda below).

Moraes temporarily took over the call after the early retirement of minister Luís Roberto Barroso. He ordered the governor to present explanations on compliance with court orders imposed by the STF in police actions.

The information required includes: a detailed report of the operation, with a prior definition of the degree of force used and formal justification for carrying it out; the number of agents involved and the weapons used; in addition to the official number of deaths, injuries and people detained.

The governor must also inform whether measures have been adopted to ensure accountability in cases of possible abuses and violations of rights, including the actions of expert bodies, the use of body cameras and assistance to victims and their families, such as sending ambulances.

As shown by the CNNin a meeting with parliamentarians last week, Castro stated that the meeting with the minister will be “technical” and not “political”.
