Pre-salt oil production grows 2.7% in September

Wells record 4.14 million barrels of oil equivalent per day; growth reflects expansion of deepwater exploration

Brazilian oil and natural gas production was 4.143 million boe/d (barrels of oil equivalent per day)according to the Monthly Oil and Natural Gas Production Bulletin released this Monday (3.Nov.2025) by (National Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels). Read the (PDF – 3 MB).

The volume produced in the region was 2.7% higher than and 12.5% higher than in September 2024. The pre-salt accounted for 81.1% of total national production, reinforcing its position as the country’s main source of oil and gas.

Since its discovery in 2006, the pre-salt has been responsible for transforming Brazil into one of the largest global oil producers.

Total production in the country

Considering all areas (pre-salt, post-salt and onshore production), Brazil produced 5.114 million boe/d in September.

The number is slightly lower than the historical record set in July, of 5.160 million boe/d, but still reflects a high and stable level of production, according to the ANP.

Here are the highlights:

  • in September, oil production was 3.915 million barrels per day, an increase of 0.5% compared to August and 12.7% compared to the same month in 2024;
  • natural gas production reached 190.6 million cubic meters per day, growth of 0.9% over August and 12.1% over September of the previous year.

Use of natural gas

Of the total gas extracted, 97.9% was utilized – that is, used as energy or reinjected into wells and 4.1 million m³ per day were burned (flaring), a reduction of 16.1% compared to the previous month.

Burning gas is a common practice in the industry to relieve pressure on equipment, but the objective is to reduce this volume as much as possible for environmental and energy efficiency reasons.

Petrobras leads production

Petrobras, alone or in a consortium with other companies, was responsible for 91.29% of the country’s total production.

Most of the oil and gas came from offshore fields – 97.6% and 85.7%, respectively. In total, 6,533 wells were in operation in September, 524 at sea and 6,009 on land.

Main fields and platforms

The Tupi field, in the Santos Basin pre-salt, remained the country’s largest producer, with 818 thousand barrels of oil per day and 40.48 million m³ of natural gas per day.

The FPSO Almirante Tamandaré platform, which operates in the Búzios and Tambuatá fields, was the installation with the highest oil production, with 222 thousand barrels per day.

In the case of natural gas, the highlight was the FPSO Guanabara, in the shared Mero deposit, with 12.13 million m³ per day.
