The building has been decommissioned since 2006, but was being renovated as part of a four-year renovation project expected to be completed next year, according to Rome city authorities.
Videos posted on social media showed clouds of dust rising from the tower’s windows and the sound of crumbling masonry.
Due to restoration work, the area around the tower was closed to pedestrians.
The building was erected by Pope Innocent III for his family at the beginning of the 13th century.
