O Peru decided to break diplomatic relations with Mexico this Monday (3) after the government of Claudia Sheinbaum start a process of granting asylum to the former prime minister Peruvian.
Peruvian Foreign Minister Hugo de Zela told journalists that Mexico had committed the “hostile act” of opening an asylum process for Betsy Chávez, who was allegedly co-author of the coup attempt led by former Peruvian president Pedro Castillo.
Castillo was removed from office and arrested in late 2022 after trying to dissolve Congress.
The former prime minister also faces criminal charges for his alleged involvement.
In September of this year, Chávez denied having tried to flee to the Mexican embassy in Peru while Castillo’s attempt to undo Congress was underway.
Her driver testified that Chavez asked him to take her there.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
