The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) announced its first Amazon Bond, raising US$100 million to finance sustainable development projects in the region. This issuance is the first in a series that is part of the Amazon Bonds Program, which covers a total of US$1 billion.

The Amazon Bonds, structured according to the Issuance Guidelines developed in partnership with the World Bank, aim to use the capital market to protect one of the most important ecosystems on the planet and strengthen local communities. The bond, with an interest rate of 3.802% per year, follows strict standards for resource use, impact measurement and transparency.

The president of the IDB Group, Ilan Goldfajn, highlighted the importance of this initiative: “The Amazon Bonds inaugurate a bold new chapter in sustainable finance, channeling investments towards solutions that benefit both nature and communities.” He emphasized that this program serves as a model to be followed by other institutions that wish to mobilize private capital to protect the Amazon.

The Brazilian National Treasury Secretariat expressed support for the initiative and demonstrated interest in issuing its own bonds under the same guidelines. The collaboration between the IDB and the World Bank, announced in July, aims to support countries in creating their Amazon Bond issuance programs.

The issuance of Amazon Bonds is part of the regional Amazônia Semper program, which seeks to accelerate sustainable development and protect biodiversity in the region. The IDB has the support of countries such as Spain and Germany, in addition to the Green Climate Fund, to develop the emission guidelines.

During COP30, which will take place from November 8th to 21st, the IDB Group will present more than 80 events with the aim of discussing innovative solutions for climate finance and sustainable development. Journalists and interested parties are invited to visit IDB spaces during the event.
