The number of victims of Tuesday evening’s collision of the Tokaj Intercity train with a passenger car near the North Hungarian Szentmártonkáta station rose to six on Wednesday. Referring to the borsonline.hu server, the TASR correspondent in Budapest reports on this.
Six people were traveling in the car. Professional firefighters from Nagykáty and volunteer firefighters from Tápiószecső were deployed in the rescue operation. Firefighters freed one person alive from the wreckage of the car, who was taken to the hospital in critical condition by rescuers, where he succumbed to his injuries despite the efforts of doctors.
According to the 24.hu server, the police specified that the vehicle was driven by a 24-year-old man. In the car were two 18-year-old women and two boys aged 15 and 17, as well as a 30-year-old man. All but one woman died on the spot.
The father of the car driver told the server blikk.hu that six young people went for a drive to celebrate their son getting a three-week reprieve from paying a previous fine for a traffic offence. The MÁV railway company said on Wednesday that the driver of the car violated traffic regulations and entered the railway crossing despite the lowered barriers, which he bypassed. No one was injured on the train.
