Our grandmothers called thyme syrup “penicillin for the poor.”. There were no easily available medicines back then, so people looked for help in natural methods. Already in the Middle Ages, thyme was used in syrups, infusions and ointments. These natural medicines helped with infections and improved the functioning of the digestive system. For this reason, thyme became a spice willingly added to fatty meats, it simply made them easier to digest.
Today, the suspicions of our grandmothers and great-grandmothers have been confirmed by science. Thyme contains thymol essential oil, vitamins A, B, C, E, K and minerals: manganese, calcium, iron and selenium.. Thanks to this, it has bactericidal and expectorant properties. It helps with cough, relieves sore throat and inflammation of the mouth. The tomol and carvacron are natural substances with antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antifungal. These effects are enhanced by the addition of honey, which also has antibacterial and antiseptic properties. Penicillin for the poor can therefore be treated as a natural support for the body in the fight against infection. – although of course it should not be treated as a substitute for professional medical care.
To prepare thyme syrup, you only need three ingredients. The recipe for penicillin for the poor is extremely simple and does not take much time.
Ingredients:
- 30 g dried thyme;
- 3 cups of water;
- 3 tablespoons of honey.
Preparation:
Pour water into the pot, add thyme and cook over low heat until some of the water evaporates. It should be reduced by 1/3. Then strain the infusion through a strainer and wait until it cools down slightly.
Add three tablespoons of honey to the still warm, but not hot, liquid and mix thoroughly. The infusion should have a temperature below 40 degrees Celsius so that the honey does not lose its health properties.
Pour the mixture into a clean, sterilized jar or bottle, close and store in the refrigerator. The syrup will be effective for the next few days.
Thyme and honey syrup can be taken 2-3 times a tablespoon. This dose is for people over 12 years of age. Children under 6 years of age should not be given the mixture at all, and for older children, under the age of twelve, one teaspoon three times a day is enough.
