The situation is almost cynical: in the name of economic efficiency, of all things, the EU is digging the grave for its own automobile industry. After vehement pressure from the conservative and right wing at EU level, the end of combustion engines is unlikely to happen after all. This would secure jobs in the automotive industry, according to the wishful thinking of many, especially the European People’s Party.
