Lula and Maduro speak at a time of tensions between the United States and Venezuela. The American president, has already made it clear that he does not rule out the possibility of sending troops to Venezuela and even said that Maduro’s days at the head of the government “are numbered”.
The Americans have also constantly attacked vessels in the Caribbean. Acts that have already left at least 83 people dead. In the midst of these attacks, Lula has constantly said that Latin America and the Caribbean should be a zone of peace and made Brazil available to mediate the conflicts.
The rapprochement between Lula and Maduro happened in the same week that the Brazilian president spoke with Trump in the same week. “We had a good conversation. We talked more about trade and economic sanctions against Brazil. But, you know, I like him,” Trump said, without adding details.
The conversation was over the phone and lasted approximately 40 minutes. The leaders would have discussed various issues, such as the economy and the fight against organized crime, according to Planalto, which also reported that the PT member indicated that the decision to remove the 40% tariffs on some Brazilian products was positive, but that other tariffed products need to be negotiated.
