Number of flights canceled in SP exceeds 400 after windstorm

More than 400 flights were canceled at São Paulo airports, after the storm that hit the entire state in recent days.

Between Wednesday (10), Thursday (11) and this Friday morning (12), the Congonhas Airport registered 305 affected flights. In Guarulhos, there were 117. The total reached 422 trips affected.

Reporter Bruno Teixeira, from CNN Brazilwas at Congonhas Airport and spoke to customers who were in the lobby. Some of them said they had their trips canceled even today. Furthermore, there were still cancellation records on the dashboards.

Aena reported that “the entire operational infrastructure of Congonhas Airport is available, as well as all passenger services.”

In contact with CNN Brazill, GOL, the airline, informed that operations continue regularly at Congonhas (CGH) and Guarulhos (GRU) airports, this Friday (12).

“For greater convenience, customers impacted by the delays and cancellations of the last two days (10 and 11/12) who are available to change their flight can do so at no additional cost”, he added in a note.

Latam, on the other hand, said that “its operations in the country continue to be affected by the effects of the adverse weather recorded this week in part of southeastern Brazil, an event completely beyond the company’s control.”

Azul also reported that several flights had to be canceled or switched to other airports. Furthermore, he regretted what happened.

The company also stated that “customers with tickets issued for the 11th and 12th of December will be able to change their trips until the 18th of December for free or, if they choose to cancel the flight, keep the full credit for the amount paid to use at another opportunity, within 1 year from the date of ticket issuance.”

Windstorm damage in SP

Civil Defense stated that the wind, considered historical in the capital and metropolitan region of São Paulo, was the effect of extratropical cyclone who graduated in the South of Brazil. The winds exceeded 90 km/h and lasted for around 12 hours.

According to Climatempo, the storm did not happen as usual, given that, this time, the meteorological phenomenon was not accompanied, for the most part, by heavy clouds, rain or storms.

Due to the strong winds, transport lines were interruptedmore than a thousand tree falls were recorded and parks were temporarily closed. In addition, the weather conditions also caused damage to the electrical grid and slow traffic.
