The costs to produce chicken and pork meat increased in Brazilaccording to a survey released by Embrapa. The increase was recorded in November and helps explain why these foods may become more expensive for consumers in the coming months.
According to Embrapa Swine and Poultry, the increase is mainly linked to increase in animal feedwhich is made from corn and soybean meal and represents the majority of spending on raising chickens and pigs. In addition, other important production items also became more expensive, such as electricity, transportation and inputs used in animal management.
In the case of broiler chickenproduction costs rose again after months of relative stability. In Paraná – a reference for the sector -, the cost was R$4.63 in November, 1.68% more than the expense recorded in October. “Feed, which represented 62.41% of total expenditure in October, rose 0.58% in the month. Costs for acquiring 1-day-old chicks (19.60% of the total) increased 7.66% in the period,” Embrapa stated in a note.
Despite this, in 2025, expenses for broiler production fell by 3.30%.
Already pig farmingcosts also increased, driven mainly by feed, which accounts for more than two thirds of the producer’s total expenditure. In Santa Catarina, the production cost per kilo of live pig was R$6.42 in November, an increase of 1.12% compared to the previous month. In the year to 2025, the index also records an increase of 3.37%.
According to Embrapa, when production costs rise and prices paid to producers do not follow this movement, the sector’s profitability comes under pressure. Over time, part of this increase tends to reach the end consumer, especially if costs remain high.
