Former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) will remain in an isolated ward at the DF Star Hospital, in Brasília, this Wednesday (24), while he undergoes tests to undergo a new surgery. All exams will be carried out today, after the arrival of the medical team responsible for the reserve captain, led by surgeon Claudio Birolini.
The former president will undergo a new surgical procedure this Thursday (25), the Christmas holiday. The surgery’s main objective is to correct a bilateral inguinal hernia and control persistent hiccups that have recently affected his health.
He will be accompanied by former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro, who will have to do without her cell phone while accompanying her husband.
Check below the details of what the operation will be like, security logistics and the medical context.
Hospitalization and procedures
Bolsonaro was admitted to the hospital this Wednesday morning (24) to undergo pre-operative exams. The surgery is scheduled for this Thursday (25).
The medical team, led by surgeon Cláudio Birolini, will carry out two main interventions:
Bilateral Inguinal Hernia Correction: The procedure aims to repair a bulge in the groin area, resulting from weakening of the abdominal wall. Experts pointed out that the condition progressively worsened due to increased intra-abdominal pressure, aggravated by chronic coughing and hiccups;
Anesthetic Phrenic Nerve Block: This intervention aims to control persistent hiccups (singultus), which would be related to nerve injuries or irritations, possibly sequelae of multiple previous surgeries;
Authorization and security
The transfer and procedure were authorized by the minister of the Federal Supreme Court (), after official expertise confirmed the need for the surgery, although it was classified as elective (scheduled) and non-emergency.
The security operation is strict. Bolsonaro, who is in custody at the Federal Police Superintendence in Brasília, was escorted to the hospital under secrecy and strong security. The court decision determines that his stay in the hospital will be monitored by federal agents and that the former president will return to custody as soon as he is medically discharged.
Recovery and companions
The medical team expects hospitalization to last between five and seven days, depending on the clinical evolution after surgery. During this period, the former first lady was allowed to remain as an escort.
Health History
This procedure adds to a series of medical interventions that Jair Bolsonaro has undergone since the attack he suffered in 2018. The history of surgeries in the abdomen has made the region more susceptible to adhesions and hernias. In April of this year, the former president had already undergone a complex surgery to clear intestinal obstruction and correct adhesions.
