Critics Choice is considered one of the barometers for the Oscars

a Brazilian feature film directed by , won the award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2026 Critics Choice Awards this Sunday (4). The film overcame the dispute between It Was Just an Accident (France), The Left-Handed Girl (Taiwan), No Other Choice (South Korea), Sirat (Spain) and Belén – A Story of Injustice (Argentina). Brazil can still end the night with another victory for The Secret Agent. Actor Wagner Moura, protagonist of the Brazilian film, competes for the Best Actor award. The competition, however, is tough. In addition to Moura, Timothée Chalamet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Joel Edgerton, Ethan Hawke and Michael B. Jordan are also competing for the award.

The Critics Choice is considered one of the barometers for the Oscars. By handing out its statuettes at the beginning of the year, the event tends to dictate trends regarding possible nominees and winners of the season, in addition to serving as a strategic reinforcement for studios in campaigns towards bigger awards. After the success of I’m Still Here, which won Best International Film at last year’s Oscar, Brazil is dreaming of new nominations for the main world cinema award.

The Secret Agent is already among those pre-nominated for the Oscar for Best International Film and Best Casting, in a list released on the 16th, by the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences.

– It Was Just an Accident (France)
