The meeting between Trump and Machado at the White House will take place on Thursday
The meeting between US President Donald Trump and the leader of the Venezuelan opposition, María Corina Machado, will finally take place on Thursday, as confirmed by the White House. Both will address the situation in Venezuela and the role that the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize winner can play in the transition process, after the United States decided to bet on the continuity of the system and on Delcy Rodríguez, executive vice president of Nicolás Maduro, at the head of the Government.
Trump had confirmed that he hoped to receive the Nobel Peace Prize winner at the presidential residence this week, although he had noted that the meeting would take place “on Tuesday or Wednesday.” Finally, it will be Thursday and at the White House.
During a meeting on Friday with oil businessmen, the US president had indicated that he would speak with Machado about a possible role in the guardianship stage that the United States plans for Venezuela before elections can be held in the South American country. “I’m going to have to talk to her. She could be involved in some way,” he had indicated.
A day earlier, in an interview with the Fox News network, he had alluded to the possibility that the opposition leader would give him her Nobel Prize, which he had longed to receive. “I have heard that she wants to do it. It would be a great honor,” he declared, indicating his willingness to accept the gift. The Nobel committee has specified that the award is not transferable.
