  • Ischinger described the dispute over Greenland as an unnecessary circus and a wasted opportunity.
  • He suggests focusing energy on ending the war in Ukraine.
  • The topic of Greenland dominated the World Economic Forum in Davos.

The chairman of the Munich Security Conference (MSC), Wolfgang Ischinger, called the ongoing dispute over US President Donald Trump’s plan to acquire Greenland a “circus”. According to him, it would be better to use the energy spent on this conflict to end the Russian war in Ukraine, reports TASR according to the DPA report.

Trump’s ambitions to acquire the autonomous territory of Denmark dominated the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where various global topics are usually discussed. “All I can say is: missed opportunity… We should have sent a signal from Davos to the Russian side that this war must finally end,” Ischinger said. He called the dispute between the Western allies over Greenland completely unnecessary and harmful.

On Wednesday in Davos, Switzerland, Trump ruled out that the US would acquire Greenland by force, of which he had repeatedly spoken before. At the same time, he retreated from threats to impose tariffs to the eight European NATO member countries that rejected his plan.

After a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, the American president announced the creation of a framework for a future agreement concerning Greenland and the entire Arctic region, but did not disclose further details. Ischinger believes that Trump’s change in attitude was due to the threat of retaliatory tariffs from Europe and the cautious approach of European leaders.
