Neither injury nor technical decision: Cristiano Ronaldo refuses to play for his club because he does not agree with this issue

Cristiano Ronaldo.

Cristiano Ronaldo decided not to play for Al Nassr in the game against Al-Riyadh, counting for the 20th round of the Saudi League, in a gesture that is not related to any physical problem or the team’s technical options. The Portuguese international’s decision opened space for a broader reading of the moment the club is experiencing.

The captain’s absence comes at a time when Al Nassr is going through a period of internal redefinition. According to the sports newspaper A Bola, the striker is deeply unhappy with the way the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF) has managed the sports society.

According to the same source, Cristiano Ronaldo considers that Al Nassr has been harmed by progressive disinvestment, especially when compared to other clubs controlled by the same state fund. This understanding gained strength after the winter market, a period in which the club reinforced the squad on a limited basis, a situation that was interpreted as a sign of a loss of competitive ambition.

The publication states that the only reinforcement secured was Haydeer Abdulkareem, a 21-year-old midfielder recruited from Iraqi football, who did not meet the needs identified by the technical team. In parallel, writes the newspaper, rival clubs, such as Al Hilal, advanced with high investments, creating an evident contrast in the sports policy followed within the same governance structure.

Inequality already publicly assumed

This imbalance had previously been assumed by the coach himself. According to the same source, in January, Jorge Jesus stated that Al Nassr “does not have the political power of Al Hilal”, a statement that had strong repercussions in Saudi football.

The Portuguese coach’s words were interpreted as a direct criticism of the current decision model, provoking institutional reactions and formal requests for sanctions.

Limited directive structure

Internal instability worsened with the Board of Directors’ decision to freeze the powers of the club’s administration. explains that the measure affected Simão Coutinho, sporting director, and José Semedo, CEO, both Portuguese.

This blockage reduced the intervention capacity of the executive structure and reinforced the perception of a lack of autonomy in defining the sports project.

Gesture that goes beyond the game

It is in this context that Cristiano Ronaldo’s refusal to play arises. The striker did not accept to play as a form of protest against a management that he considers harmful to Al Nassr. The decision is not related to the next game against Al Ittihad, nor to any rotation plan, but represents a clear sign of rupture between the captain and the current management of the club.
