Lula makes a mistake and calls Janja by his ex-wife's name

The president Lula starred in an unusual moment during an official event in the municipality of Mauá, in São Paulo, this Monday (09). While speaking to the audience present, the president committed a mistake by referring to the current first lady, Rosângela da Silva, Janja, by the name of his ex-wife, Marisa Letícia, who passed away in 2017.

The episode occurred quickly: when trying to mention the companion who accompanied him on the agenda, Lula ended up saying Marisa’s name. Realizing the mistake immediately, the president corrected his speech and continued his speech normally, without further interruptions.

Trajectory and memory

The name confusion caught the attention of internet users, but was understood by many as a reflection of the more than 40 years of coexistence between Lula and Marisa Letícia. The former first lady was a fundamental player in the PT member’s entire political trajectory, from the founding of the party and the days of trade unionism to the first two terms as President of the Republic.

Currently married to Janja, the president usually highlights the importance of his current wife in his third term, describing her as a right-hand man in the coordination and daily life of the Palácio do Planalto. Despite the gaffe, the atmosphere in Mauá remained festive with the announcement of investments for the region.
