Shooting attack at school in Canada leaves at least 10 dead

Suspect was found dead at the scene; around 25 people were injured and two are in very serious condition

At least ten people died this Tuesday (10) after an individual opened fire at a school in the city of Tumbler Ridge, in western Canada, according to local police.

Authorities have avoided releasing details about the identity or age of the victims at this time, but have not ruled out that students and faculty members are among the dead.

According to initial reports from security forces, six of the victims were located inside the school, while two other bodies were found in a residence. Another person died while being transported to a hospital.

The alleged perpetrator of the massacre was also found dead inside the school with self-inflicted injuries.

Authorities also reported that approximately 25 people are being treated for injuries at the local medical center and that two others were evacuated by helicopter in very serious condition.

Police agents continue to search houses and properties in the town, located about 1,150 kilometers northeast of Vancouver, to check that there are no more victims. The police ruled out the existence of other suspects.

The Royal Mounted Police of explained that, around 1:20 pm (local time, 7:20 pm Brasília time), he started receiving calls about the shooting at the school in the small town, which has around 2,400 inhabitants.

“As part of the initial response to the active shooting, police entered the school to locate the threat. During the search, officers located several victims. A person believed to be the perpetrator of the shooting was also found dead,” the Mounted Police said in an official statement.

The note concludes by informing that all students and staff who remained at the educational center were evacuated safely.

British Columbia Provincial Premier David Eby described the attack as an “unimaginable tragedy” and expressed deep regret for the lives lost and the devastating impact on the small community.

During a press conference, Eby stated that the hearts of Canadians “are in Tumbler Ridge” and assured that the provincial government will provide all necessary support to the families of the victims and those affected by the trauma in the coming days.

The governor also signaled that he plans to visit the location “as soon as possible” to meet with residents and coordinate assistance after the shooting.

For his part, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was “devastated” by Tuesday’s shooting in Tumbler Ridge and expressed his condolences to the families and friends of the victims.

“I am devastated by today’s horrific shootings in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. My prayers and deepest condolences go out to the families and friends of those who lost loved ones in these acts of violence,” Carney said in a statement.
