Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs (MZVEZ) SR closely follows the process of formation of the Dutch minority government and opposes the designation of Slovakia in the coalition agreement as a country that actively undermines Europe. This was stated on Wednesday by the head of the Slovak Department of Diplomacy, Juraj Blanár, writes TASR.
“We strongly object to the absolutely false designation of Slovakia in the coalition agreement of the yet-to-be-appointed government as a country that is said to be ‘actively undermining Europe’.” he wrote on the Facebook social network.
According to Blanár, the European Union is a living space for Slovakia. “We are a responsible, constructive European partner. However, by joining the EU, the member states do not lose their sovereignty, and therefore if something does not develop in the right direction, The Slovak government will always defend the national interests of Slovakia,” he continued.
The head of Slovak diplomacy claims that “the topics we open are also important for the EU itself and its future”. According to him, the European Union was founded on the principle of mutual respect and equality of votes. “Therefore, the preservation of the right of veto in matters in which it still applies is very important for the future of the EU and cannot be a reason for attacking European partners or imposing sanctions,” he emphasized.
According to Blanár, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs communicated this message with the Dutch partner through standard diplomatic channels along with a call for an open and honest dialogue. “Diversity of opinion combined with open debate represents the very essence of the European Union and, paradoxically, is also part of the Dutch political culture,” he added.
