The fire broke out on Thursday morning in an apartment on the fourth floor, where due to the excessive amount of furniture, it started to spread uncontrollably and heavily smoked the entire building.
An extensive fire in a high-rise apartment building in Berlin claimed the life of one child and injured several others, the DPA agency reported on Thursday, citing the statement of the fire chief.

Fire in the apartment
The fire engulfed a high-rise building in the Friedrichsfelde district in the East Berlin district of Lichtenberg. Available photos show that the fire started in one of the apartments on the fourth floor. Firefighters later clarified that there was an unusually large amount of furniture in the apartment, which resulted in the rapid spread of the fire. The entire building was heavily smoky during the fire.
About 60 people were in the house at the time of the fire. Some got to safety on their own, others were evacuated by firefighters.
One of the children succumbed to his injuries
As the newspaper Bild wrote, five people needed immediate medical attention. Three of them – two children and one adult – suffered life-threatening injuries and had to be resuscitated on the spot and then taken to hospital. One of the children succumbed to his injuries later in the evening.
Firefighters extinguished the fire in the meantime. 20 apartments are currently uninhabitable: some have no electricity or water, others are very smoky.
