Train derails on the Eastern Line in Abrantes

A railcar derailed on Wednesday night on the Linha do Leste, in the Bemposta area, in the municipality of Abrantes, in an incident that did not cause any injuries, a Civil Protection source told Lusa.

The incident occurred at 9pm on Wednesday and led to the interruption of traffic on the Eastern Line, which connects Abrantes, district of Santarém, and the border with Spain (Badajoz).

Telmo Ferreira, operations officer at (ANEPC), told Lusa that the incident occurred in the Bemposta area, Abrantes, after the train collided with debris and a tree that slid onto the line.

Due to the incident, members of Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) were deployed to the site to replace the train on the line, repair damage and clean the track.

According to the latest IP report, at 6pm on Wednesday, traffic was suspended on the Sintra Line, on the external descending route between Cacém and Monte Abraão, on the Cascais Line, on the ascending route between Algés and Caxias, on the Northern Line, between Alfarelos and Formoselha, on the Douro Line, between Régua and Pocinho, on the Oeste Line, between Mafra and Amieira, on the Beira Baixa Line, between Ródão and Sarnadas, on the Vouga Line, Oliveira Azeméis and Pinheiro da Bemposta and in the Xabregas concordance, between Lisboa Santa Apolónia and the Chelas Bifurcation.

Sixteen people died in Portugal following the Kristin, Leonardo and Marta depressions, which also caused many hundreds of injured and displaced.
