Winter beauty: Homemade facial masks from root vegetables

Winter can be merciless to the skin and often even the best cream from the drugstore is not enough. The skin is tired, gray and lifeless, because it is washed all day with the cold outside and the dry heat at home. It is at times like these that it makes sense to go back to the basics and reach for ingredients that our grandmothers already used.

Winter takes more of a toll on the skin than we often admit. Cold wind, frost and dry air from the heater quickly leave the skin tight, dull and sometimes irritated. However, it is during this period that what we normally have in the kitchen at home can serve surprisingly well. , especially carrots and beets, is not only the basis of honest winter meals, but also a simple way to give the skin nutrition and freshness without chemicals.

Carrots maintain a healthy skin tone

Carrots are known for their high content of beta-carotene and vitamin A, which supports the renewal of skin cells and helps the skin maintain a healthy tone. Thanks to vitamin C, carrots have a slightly brightening effect and at the same time soften the skin. With regular use, the skin appears softer and more resistant to drying, which is so typical in winter.

Beetroot supports skin regeneration

Beetroot is often neglected in cosmetics, despite the fact that it has a lot to offer. It contains substances that support the blood circulation of the skin and its natural regeneration. This is why the skin often looks fresher and acquires a healthier color after a beet mask. In addition, beets help remove impurities and can have a slightly detoxifying effect, which is especially appreciated by tired and dull skin.

Homemade masks from root vegetables have one big advantage, you know exactly what you are putting on your skin. No perfumes, no preservatives, just fresh ingredients full of vitamins. In winter, when the skin is more sensitive than usual, such simple care is often much more pleasant than heavily perfumed creams. In addition, you can prepare the mask in a few minutes, using only what you already have at home.

“A mask made of finely grated raw potato also works very well. The potato soothes the skin, tightens the pores and helps with redness and swelling. When mixed with a spoonful of white yogurt or cottage cheese, a simple mask is created that refreshes and unifies the skin, which is especially useful in winter, when the skin is dry and tired,” says beautician Šárka Králová.

Carrot and beetroot face mask recipe

Raw materials:

  • a smaller carrot
  • a piece of boiled beetroot
  • one spoon of honey
  • a few drops of olive or almond oil

Procedure:

Grate the carrots finely or boil briefly and mash with a fork to make a smooth paste. Also cook and mash or grate beetroot and mix with carrots. Add honey to the mixture to help soothe and hydrate the skin. In the case of very sensitive skin, even a few drops of olive oil will help. Mix everything thoroughly to form a compact paste. Apply the mask to cleansed skin, avoiding the eye area, and leave it on for about fifteen minutes. Then rinse it off with lukewarm water and gently dry the skin.

After the mask, the skin may be slightly pink, which is a natural reaction to blood flow and usually disappears in a short time. But the skin often feels fresher, softer and pleasantly nourished to the touch immediately after application.
