Over the popular resort of Courmayeur, a mass of snow slid down in the morning, burying a group of skiers moving in free terrain. Two people, probably French citizens, did not survive the accident.
At least two skiers died on Sunday as a result of an avalanche in the Italian Alps, the mountain service there reported. Another person is in critical condition. Two people did not survive the fall of the avalanche
The Italian Alpine Mountain Service (CNSAS) said the victims were a woman and a man. Another critically injured person is a man who was airlifted to a hospital in Turin in critical condition. According to CNSAS, fifteen rescuers were involved in the search, along with search dogs and two helicopters. The rescuers then continued to search for other possible victims.
Italian media reported that the avalanche moved around 11:00 a.m. above the village of Courmayeur, where the group was skiing off the marked piste. Some reports indicate that up to six skiers were trapped under the snow.
Avalanche season in the Alps
Another avalanche also fell in the Trentino region in the north of Italy on Sunday. The mountain rescue service stated that the skiers managed to rescue a person covered in snow by their own efforts.
Several fatal avalanche accidents have already occurred in the Alps this season.
