Opposition presses for joint session in favor of Master’s CPMI and dosimetry

With the resumption of activities after the Carnival break, the opposition should increase pressure for a joint session of the National Congress. The desire of congressmen is to advance in the analysis of the veto of the Dosimetry PL (bill) and the installation of the CPMI (parliamentary commission of inquiry).

Recently, the deputy (PL-RJ) announced that he had reached the necessary number of signatures to create a CPMI to investigate fraud at Banco Master. Still, for the collegiate to be installed, the request needs to be read by the president of Congress, Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP).

As the rules provide, this must take place in a joint session, but so far there is no forecast of when a session bringing together deputies and senators will take place. The last occurred on December 19, when parliamentarians voted and approved the 2026 budget.

The joint session is also awaited by the opposition due to veto analysis. Congressmen are pressing for President Lula’s (PT) veto of the project to reduce sentences for those involved in the January 8 attacks to be put on the agenda.

The proposal that benefits former president Jair Bolsonaro was completely vetoed by Lula in a ceremony that marked three years since the January 8 attacks. The government, in a message sent to the Legislature, justified that the proposition is unconstitutional and goes against the public interest.

Currently, 73 presidential vetoes are being processed in Congress, 72 of which are from Lula and one from former president Jair Bolsonaro. One of these vetoes, for example, concerns the increase in the number of federal deputies.

The presidential veto is part of the legislative process and is provided for by the Federal Constitution. Once the proposals are processed in Congress, the Presidency of the Republic is notified and a deadline of 15 working days is set to respond.

In the event of a veto, the Constitution provides 30 days for Congress to consider the decision. Once the deadline has passed, the veto is placed on the agenda of the immediate session with priority. However, the prediction is not usually invoked and some vetoes drag on for years.
